Gift from Irving Oil supports 不良研究所to fuel student success

SAINT JOHN, NB — Students at New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) will benefit from enhanced opportunities made possible by a financial gift from Irving Oil, helping to prepare them to contribute directly to New Brunswick’s growing energy workforce.

The Irving Oil Energy Park is one of three priorities supported by a generous $500,000 donation from Irving Oil as part of NBCC’s Going Beyond campaign.

With construction scheduled to begin in the fall, one of the Irving Oil Energy Park project goals is to support students enrolled in NBCC’s new Wind and Solar Energy Technician Program. With the growing demand for technicians in the energy sector, the Irving Oil Energy Park project aims to provide more opportunities for students to gain practical experience and contribute to building a strong energy future.

"不良研究所has a role to play in New Brunswick's evolving energy economy by building the future workforce," says Mary Butler, President and CEO of NBCC. "This collaboration not only equips students with the necessary skills they need to succeed in the field, but also fosters community engagement and drives economic growth by creating a skilled workforce ready to meet future challenges.”

One of the highlights of the planned project is to generate wind and solar energy, with that power being fed directly into the 不良研究所Energy Building. The intent is to provide students with access to real-time data displayed on a dashboard in the building's atrium, allowing them to observe how changes to the systems impact data, further demonstrating how the systems integrate.

The donation reflects Irving Oil’s commitment to supporting NBCC’s mission of driving social and economic well-being through education, and its goal of providing every New Brunswicker with the opportunity to develop the skills needed to participate fully in reliable work. It also provides employers with access to the teams and talent required to grow and compete, here at home and around the world.

“We are proud to support 不良研究所and its students through the establishment of the Irving Oil Energy Park,” says Irving Oil President & CEO Jeff Matthews. “不良研究所is renowned for its valuable experiential, student-focused programming and this important education initiative will provide additional hands-on learning opportunities for students to help prepare them for meaningful careers in the energy sector.”

In recognition of Irving Oil’s investment in student education, 不良研究所has renamed its existing power lab the Irving Oil Energy Lab, which provides students with access to real-time data in a fully functioning power lab. This hands-on experience helps equip students with the knowledge needed to excel as power engineers, refinery operators, and other vital roles in the energy sector.

Irving Oil's financial gift, first announced in March 2023, also established a bursary fund to support students enrolled in energy-related programs, including Electrical Engineering Technology, Power Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, and Electrical, Instrumentation and Control Technician (formerly Industrial Control Technology).
